Alley Steps Down as AHS Football Coach

After leading the Albemarle High School football team to its first playoff berth in a decade, Mike Alley is stepping down as coach of the Patriots.

The school announced Alley's decision to resign on Thursday. According to the release, Alley plans to devote more attention to his work in youth ministry, and will also leave the school's staff in June.

"We are deeply grateful for his contributions to our students and families and for his role in making “Champion” a more powerful word in our school, both on and off the gridiron," the school's release said.

Alley took over the Patriot program in 2010, and went 12-29 in his four seasons as head coach. This past season, AHS went 6-4 during the regular season, including a 21-20 upset of previously unbeaten Monticello at MHS in late October. The Patriots earned the No. 9 seed in the Region 5A North playoffs -- ending a 10-year postseason drought at AHS -- before losing 24-23 at Falls Church in the bracket's opening round.
