The stage was set as if it were a normal night in the Jefferson District. The Charlottesville Black Knights boys and girls basketball teams visiting Monticello, each with prime time match ups. The only difference is this time, there was a district title on the line.
The girls were up first. Even though the Lady Knights swept the Mustangs in both of their regular season meetings, the games were extremely competitive. On Friday, it was no different.
Each team traded blows throughout the first half, and it wasn't until late in regulation that two Ellie Von Storch three pointers would put some breathing room between Charlottesville and Monticello as the Knights would take down the title in a 40-27 victory.
The boys game would play similarly. The first half resembled a classic heavy weight fight. The Knights and Mustangs traded knock out punches in the form of lay ups and three pointers. However, eventually fatigue set in after only one night of rest for each team.
The Mustangs would never hold a lead in the game, but did manage to come within one point of tying until the Knights took the gloves off and ran away to a 65-39 win and a Jefferson District tournament championship.
All four teams will advance to the Region II playoffs which begin next week.
