There are still just over two months left before Orlando Patterson's Blue Ridge Barons begin defending their VISAA Division II state title. In the meantime, Patterson has been working on his coaching game while helping out at the Mike London Football Camp.
The Barons' head coach, who is entering his third season, has helped out as a guest coach at the quarterback camp and 7-on-7 competition at UVa for the past two years.
"It's a learning experience, you know you're always learning with these guys," Patterson says of working with Mike London and his staff. "It's a great staff here at UVa, and any opportunity to learn from some of the best is a golden opportunity."
Patterson reached out to the staff last year, and they invited him to work as a guest coach during their summer camps. He says he's embraced the opportunity to be a student and a coach at the same time.
"At the end of the day, they're people just like you, but you know they do have brains as well, and you try to pick them apart as much as possible."
Patterson says appreciates the UVa staff's high expectations for their players, and tries to set the bar just as high for his Barons.
"You know we're all similar in the same sense where we're never satisfied, we want the best for our players. That's something that I try to instill in our guys up at Blue Ridge and you know, just being around the UVa staff, it really helps.
"The fact that they're pushing their guys to the next level and getting the best of them, really helps."
