CHS Holds Golf Fundraiser at Meadowcreek

The Charlottesville golf team won the Jefferson District title for the first time in school history last season.

Now the Black Knights are turning to the community for help in doing it again.

The team needs new equipment but can't afford it due to budget cuts at the school. So the players, coaches and parents decided to hold a fundraising tournament Saturday at Meadowcreek, with the proceeds going towards new bags, uniforms and tournament entry fees.

"We need it pretty bad," senior Ryan Cox explained. "Very few of us last year had bags that stood on their own. Usually we had to lay them down. We also haven't had hats the last few years. It's unfortunate but this tournament will definitely help."

Over 50 golfers came out to support the cause, including many former CHS players.

"A couple teammates said the tournament was happening so I thought it'd be a good idea to come back, give a little back and have some fun with some old guys," Charlottesville alum Ben Kayton said. "It's been a good time."

Local businesses chipped in to sponsor holes and contribute prizes for a raffle.

"It's great that we had parents involved in raising the money and talking to people about playing," CHS coach Dick Engel said.

"Everything they've done has gone above and beyond the call of duty," Cox added. "We really appreciate it and it's so nice to know that the city of Charlottesville and hopefully some of the county too can rally around our team like this and support us when we need it."
