Covenant's Gaffney Gives Verbal to St. Joseph's

Drew Gaffney is a two-sport star at Covenant, excelling on the football and lacrosse fields.

But Gaffney will be toting a stick instead of a helmet at the next level, giving his verbal agreement to play Division I Lacrosse at St. Joseph's.

"It's such a blessing and I'm so honored," Gaffney said Wednesday. "I've been working with my dad ever since I was in the third grade, training everyday, training hard and I'm just thankful for this opportunity."

The Hawks are a member of the Atlantic 10, and according to Gaffney, an up-and-coming program.

"Definitely a program on the rise. (The coaches) have great plans for this team and I just really feel like it's going to be an NCAA (tournament)-type team in the future and it's a team I want to be a part of."

Gaffney also considered offers from schools like Richmond, High Point and Hampden-Sydney, but knew St. Joe's was his choice.

"Ever since I stepped foot on campus I just felt at home and the coaches there just have a great plan for the future. When I went up for my visit, meeting with the guys and hanging with them I just had a great time and it just felt like the right place for me."

One of those guys is St. Anne's-Belfield alum Miles Davis, a freshman with the Hawks. Gaffney says the two are friends and that was a factor in the decision.

"He's one of my good friends here before he left and I spent a good amount of time with him up there," Gaffney explained.

Gaffney scored 40 goals in 2013 for Eagles coach Mike Gardner, who's happy for his student.

"I'm happy that what the coaches recognized in Drew is something I recognized right away: his character. It's something that differentiates him from the rest," Gardner said.

"He can be an impact player right away. They're looking for kids just like him. A lot of hustle, lot of heart and a lot of character."
