Many area high school basketball teams tipped off in district tournament action on Friday night. The Jefferson District Tournament headlined our local schedule, with the top four seeds in both the boys and girls brackets advancing.
Boys action saw the Jefferson District Tournament get out to a good start for many teams. Top seeded Fluvanna earned a 73-48 victory over defending district champion Western Albemarle. Josh Hinkle lead the Flucos with 24 points.
Second seeded Charlottesville got a scare from Goochland, but still earned a 64-57 win over the Bulldogs. Daquan Jones led the Knights with 15 points, while Devin Turner and Deshaun Blakey chipped in 14 apiece. Charlottesville advances to face Orange in Tuesday's quarterfinals. The Hornets topped Louisa on Thursday, 64-56.
Monticello handled William Monroe in the 4-5 match up on Friday, 77-58. The Dragons opened the game on a 9-2 run, but the Mustangs took control and cruised to the win. Monticello will take on Fluvanna in Tuesday's semifinals.
Albemarle traveled to Mountain View for the Commonwealth District quarterfinals and was unable to advance, as the Patriots fell, 66-61. Hernon Henderson led Albemarle with 20 points in the loss.
Madison advanced to the Bull Run District semifinals with a 84-20 win over Rappahannock. Travis Warren scored 18 points and Bobby Ford chipped in 17 for the Mountaineers who will face George Mason in the district semifinals on Tuesday. That match up will take place at Clarke County High School.
Several area private school teams played in regular season action on Friday. Woodberry Forest downed STAB, 74-58 and Miller topped Roanoke Catholic, 62-44. Blue Ridge remained undefeated with a 78-68 win over Kestrel Heights (NC). The Barons improved to 19-0 with the big win over a traditional North Carolina powerhouse.
Girls action saw the top four seeds in the Jefferson District Tournament advance as well. Top seeded Western Albemarle stayed perfect in district play this year, topping Goochland, 65-25. Ellen Shaffrey led the Warriors with 19 points, while Carolyn Schneller added 14 for the Warriors.
Second seeded William Monroe narrowly avoided an upset with a 29-27 win over Fluvanna. Tiffany Snead scored 14 of the Dragons 29 points.
Charlottesville looked good against Orange on Friday. The Knights rolled to a 50-19 win. London Todd scored 13 points to pace Charlottesville, which will face William Monroe at Monticello in Wednesday's semifinals.
Monticello played host to Louisa in the 4-5 game and earned a 62-44 win. Bridgett Holloran scored 16 points to lead the Mustangs to the victory. Monticello will take on Western Albemarle in semifinal action on Wednesday.
