Three days after winning their first ever boy's soccer state championship, the Covenant Eagles brought some new hardware back to school for the trophy case.
The Eagles won the VISAA Division II title game over Carlisle 1-0 on Friday in Richmond.
"That was the best feeling I've ever had," Covenant senior forward Girma Fekadu-Baker said Monday. Baker scored the game winning goal on a free kick in the second half. "I've been playing soccer since I was a little kid, and that was my first time having that experience, celebrating with coach and with teammates."
"I've won some soccer tournaments before, but this is probably the greatest feeling I've ever had." said sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Whyte, who helped shut out Carlisle in the win. "To win it just felt phenomenal, especially for the seniors, the guys that this is their last time getting to play with us and the first time in school history, it really speaks volumes about the team that we were able to do something like this."
The Eagles were honored Monday in a school assembly, but they say the support from their peers started long before they won the title game.
"They came out and supported us and everyone was behind us, the teachers, the students, the parents, everyone was there supporting us," said Whyte. "There were alumni people watching from all around, so it felt really great to be able to do something like that and have them behind us."
"I was shocked with the fans who showed up in that cold, that was great," added Baker. "Every single time, just playing with them standing beside us and supporting us, that was a great experience. And to come back to school and everybody's saying 'congrats,' that was the best feeling."
