Micky Sullivan only needed one word to describe his reaction to an invitation to put the Fork Union football team on national television.
"Wow," FUMA's athletic director and football coach said on Thursday.
"Anybody that's involved in high school football has turned on the games, and listened to them and watched them," Sullivan added. "And dreamed about the day maybe you'll be good enough to get invited or play in one of those games."
The dream will become a reality for the Blue Devils on August 25, when they face Hermitage at Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake. The game will be televised nationally by one of the ESPN networks.
"It's a great honor for Fork Union, for all the guys that have come before and built the program," Sullivan said. "It's a great honor for central Virginia high school football, and Virginia Independent School football. I think it's just kind of a really big honor for everybody."
The game will be a showcase for two of the top rising senior college football recruits in Virginia -- FUMA quarterback Christian Hackenberg, who committed to Penn State in late February, and running back Derrick Green of Hermitage. Both players are rated as four-star recruits by both Rivals and 247Sports.
The Blue Devils will open preseason camp five days earlier than originally scheduled to accommodate the August 25 kickoff. And Sullivan admitted his team may need the extra practice time to prepare for Hermitage.
"Yeah, they're pretty good. I think they've lost two games in two years," he said. "It's like, okay, one of those kind of deals. They're really good. But it's kind of normal for us. Everybody who wants to play us is pretty good. So that's just kind of what we do."
