The Fluvanna boys' basketball team successfully defended their Region II crown Saturday night with a 64-57 victory over Handley in the last ever game at the Shoebox. YaYa Anderson led the team with 31 points to set up a first round match up in states with James Monroe.
"It's a good feeling," said Anderson after the game. "Coach Rateau came in and he told us it's the last game at the Shoebox and you don't want to lose. That's the only team to beat us (here) in two years so it was a little bit of revenge and we had to do everything."
"Wow, that was an exciting win," said fellow senior Taylor Lintecum. "That was a big game, John Handley is a great team and big competition out there. It was a lot of physical play, rough out there but we came out with the win."
The night started in favor of Handley, who jumped out to a 13-4 lead after a pair of three pointers from Rob Lawler. Fluvanna closed the gap to four by the end of the quarter and got within one midway through the second on an Anderson drive. Two free throws from Taylor Lintecum gave Fluvanna their first lead 20-19.
The Judges responded again with a 12-2 scoring run to regain a ten-point lead midway through the second. The Flucos again cut the deficit to four on a last second layup from Lintecum, trailing 28-32 at halftime.
The Flucos got back on top in the third quarter with a layup and foul from Anderson, making it 42-41with 4:20 to play in the third. Fluvanna led 48-46 heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth, Handley would tie the game again at 48, but on the ensuing possession, a three pointer from Anderson put the Flucos ahead for good. He scored 12 of his 31 points in the final quarter to help secure the victory.
"At halftime, it felt like we were getting beat worse than we were but it was only a four point game going out," said Lintecum. "We came out and played a lot better defense, rebounding better, and came out and made free throws."
"We came out with a higher intensity," said Anderson on the second half effort. "They were up and we had just been down to Charlottesville and we knew that we could come back from a deficit so we weren't worried, we knew we had to come in an execute and that's what we did."
Fluvanna will face James Monroe in the first round of the AA VHSL state tournament next weekend. Handley will face reigning state champion Brunswick.
