Flucos Get Rematch with Handley in Region II Championship

Back in late December, Handley did something no other visiting boys basketball team has been able to do in recent seasons.

They won at the Shoebox.

On Saturday night at 7 p.m., the Judges will return to Fluvanna County High School to visit the Flucos, this time in the Region II, Division 3 championship game.

"The only team to beat us in two years here," Fluvanna senior guard YaYa Anderson said before practice on Friday. "So we're coming out for a little revenge. But we know we have to come out and work hard in practice today and we come out with a lot of intensity tomorrow."

Handley handed the Flucos a 73-61 defeat back on December 28, in the championship of the Fluvanna Christmas Bash. It was Fluvanna's first loss of the season.

The Flucos are coming off Thursday night's 47-46 win at home over Charlottesville in the Region II semifinals. The Judges beat Monticello 66-62 in Winchester in the tournament's other semifinal.

"It's going to be a great challenge for us," Fluvanna coach Munro Rateau said. "They've set their sights early to be the best team in the area. We had to prove it last night and we're gonna have to prove it again tomorrow."

"They're a good team, they're gonna come out," said Anderson. "One of the hardest teams we've played against and we know what we have to do to come out and beat them."

The winner of Saturday's Region II championship will face Region I runner-up James Monroe in the quarterfinals of the Division 3 state tournament next weekend at James Madison. The loser will go to the Siegel Center in Richmond to face Region I champion Brunswick, the defending Division 3 state champs.

The Bulldogs beat James Monroe 67-48 in Friday's Region I championship.
