The William Monroe baseball team has won the last two dozen baseball games it's played. Now the Greene Dragons are hoping to add two more to that total.
"We've been going at it since early February, when the season started. And we're fortunate enough to play in June," coach Mike Maynard said Thursday. "And that was our goal, to make it to the state tournament. Now we have a game left on Friday. And hopefully we can win that game, and we'd have a game on Saturday."
Monroe faces John Battle at 10 a.m. Friday at Salem's Kiwanis Park in the Division 2 state semifinals. Fans cheered on as fire trucks escorted the team bus away from the school Thursday evening.
The Greene Dragons entered the season as the defending Jefferson District champions, but because of redistricting had moved to the Group-A Bull Run District.
"It's been a lot of hard work," Maynard said. "The guys have bought into everything we've asked them to do. I've got an unbelievable coaching staff. And we've got a lot of veteran leaders. I have eight seniors on the team. That makes my job a lot easier."
With the exception of an early season loss to Albemarle, Monroe has been perfect this spring. That includes an undefeated run through the district, and a 6-0 record in postseason games, all at home.
"We've been swinging the bats pretty well, running the bases pretty well, and our defense has been consistent all year," said Maynard. "So we're going to go down there and see where it takes us."
