Round Four between the Fluvanna and Charlottesville boys was everything everyone anticipated. The top-seeded Flucos survived to win a nailbiter over No. 5 Charlottesville, 47-46, in the Region II Division III semifinals Thursday night at the Shoebox.
The Flucos and Black Knights were meeting up for the second time in eight days, after Charlottesville upset Fluvanna in the semifinals of the Jefferson District Tournament.
The Black Knights came out looking for a repeat and led 14-10 after the first quarter thanks to a couple Darius Watson three-pointers and extended the lead to 29-22 at halftime on an Ethan Best bucket at the buzzer.
The Flucos came out flying in the third and outscored Charottesville 16-5 to hold a 38-34 advantage entering the fourth.
The Black Knights scored two quick buckets to tie the game at 38. Fluvanna held a 47-46 lead with 14 seconds left after a YaYa Anderson putback but Charlottesville had one last chance.
Watson missed a three, however, and Fluvanna held on for the one-point win. The Flucos will face Handley Saturday night in the Shoesbox for the Region II crown.
That's because Handley was a 66-62 winner over Monticello. The Mustangs only trailed by a bucket at the half and got within one with 43 seconds left in the game but Handley was able to hang on for the win. Jhalil Mosley finished with 19 points for Monticello.
In other Regional action, the William Monroe boys fell to undefeated No. 1 seed Dan River, 75-56, in the Region B DII semifinals. The Green Dragons only trailed by five at the half and got within one in the third quarter but Dan River pulled away.
The defending VIC Champions, Blue Ridge, earned a trip back to the finals with a convincing 52-20 win over Liberty Christian Academy in the semifinals. The Barons held the Bulldogs to just one field goal in the second half. Blue Ridge will face off with the Miller School in the VIC Championship. The Mavericks traveled to Virginia Episcopal and won an overtime thriller, 93-89.
On the girls side, Jefferson District Champion Monticello went to No. 2 seed Woodgrove and fell 66-31 in the Region II semifinals. Meanwhile the Miller School girls advanced to the Blue Ridge Conference final with a 65-29 win over Eastern Mennonite.
