Fall sports are winding down on the high school level as many area teams have already seen their respective seasons come to an end. For the squads still playing, much is at stake with every single contest, and several local teams capturing very crucial victories on Thursday night.
The Orange Hornets won the Jefferson District field hockey title with a 1-0 win over Western Albemarle. Rachel Gardner tallied the lone goal of the game in overtime to push the Hornets to the championship. The Warriors were the regular season district champions, and Orange earns an automatic Region II bid with the win on Thursday night.
On the volleyball court, Western entered the Jefferson District volleyball tournament as the number one seed and looked like it on Thursday night. The Warriors cruised to a 3-0 win over Charlottesville in the quarterfinals to set up a match up with Louisa in semifinal action. Riley Martin tallied 20 assists for the Warriors in the win. Western is now 21-3 overall in 2010. The Warriors face a Lions team on Tuesday that outlasted William Monroe, 3-2, in other quarterfinal action.
Monticello backed up its number two seeding, topping Orange, 3-0. Kate Geldmacher led the way with eleven kills and Charlotte Devine added four aces for the Mustangs, who improve to 17-9 on the year. They'll face Fluvanna in Tuesday's semifinals, which topped Goochland in its quarterfinal match on Thursday. The district semifinals will be held Tuesday at Charlottesville High School beginning at 6:00 pm.
