Louisa and Monticello were scheduled to meet Friday in area basketball action on both the boys and girls sides, but with a possibility of snowy weather, decided to move the contests up to Thursday night.
The boys contest saw Monticello jump out to an early lead, but it was the Lions coming away with the 72-57 victory. Louisa earned its first district victory by topping the Mustangs, who handed Fluvanna its first loss this past Tuesday. Monticello will take on Orange next Tuesday, while Louisa will face Powhatan on Monday.
Albemarle's boys also taking the court Thursday, as the Patriots hit the road to Colonial Forge for Commonwealth District action. The contest went to overtime, but the Pats couldn't fend off a late Colonial Forge charge, as they fell, 71-62, in OT. Kendall Hawkins led Albemarle with 20 points. The Patriots will host Charlottesville on Saturday.
Girls action saw Monticello and Louisa go down to the wire. In the game's final seconds, Khadijah Winkey caught an air-ball and put it up and in for two to tie the game at 50. The Lions recovered a loose ball on the other end of the floor and the Mustangs committed a foul with 0.5 seconds remaining. Brianna Whalen hit both free throws to put the Lions up, 52-50, and that ended up being the final as Monticello could not get a shot off before the buzzer. Monticello will host Culpeper on Monday, while the Lions head to Charlottesville on Tuesday.
