Forty years ago the football team at Madison County delivered the school's first state championship.
Friday night players and coaches from that team took their turn in the spotlight as the school honored them in a ceremony before kickoff versus Culpeper.
It was all part of "Mountaineer Fest", which featured a mechanical bull, DJ and pep rally prior to the home opener.
That 1973 team was the first in school history to go undefeated, as the Mountaineers finished 13-0 and beat Clintwood for the state title.
Madison would go on to win two more state titles, but the first one, and Friday night's recognition, meant a lot to the team.
"It's hard to put a measure on tonight and all the time I've had here and all the people," longtime coach Eddie Dean said. "You can't not be emotional here."
"It means a lot for us to all get together and we share a bond that is special so it's great to see all these guys and we want to thank the community for all the support they gave us through the years and out here," added Jeff Early, the quarterback of that 1973 team.
