Every high school basketball player dreams of playing Division I basketball.

Rachel Odumu made that dream reality Thursday.

In front of friends and teammates at the Miller School gym, Odumu signed her national letter of intent to play at Monmouth in New Jersey.

"I really waited all my life to do it," Odumu said of playing at the next level. "I said if I'm going to play basketball at the collegiate level, why not do it big and be the best that I can possibly be and I think Division I, I'm going to really make an impact there."

Odumu said she chose the Hawks after her official visit left a major impression.

"I love the campus, it's right on the beach so I love that. And when you sense family, and I sensed it there, it was a done deal."

Odumu is a defensive stopper for the Mavericks, often lining up against the opposition's best player.

"Basketball is won on the defensive side of things and I think I'm a good defensive player," Odumu said of her strengths.

Odumu spent the last four seasons as a Maverick, including winning a state championship. She says the school has played a large part in her development as a person.

"Miller is the ultimate school. It gives you a sense of family, an education, it gives you life lessons. It's given me the opportunity to grow outside of being a basketball player. It's been the greatest thing to happen to me."
