Monroe Boys Roll into State Semifinals

The William Monroe boys exploded for 30 points in the third quarter of Friday night's Division 2 state quarterfinal, pulling away from Northumberland for an easy 74-44 win.

The Greene Dragons advance to face the winner of Saturday's Graham/Gate City quarterfinal in next Thursday's Division 2 semifinal.

Despite missing some time in the first half with an apparent injury, senior guard Gary Morris led the Greene Dragons with 17 points in the win. Senior forward Markel Williams added 13.

Both teams got off to a slow start at the Siegel Center. The game was tied 8-8 after the first quarter, before Monroe moved ahead for a 10-point lead at halftime.

Monroe outscored the Indians 30-10 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
