Saturday's win in the Group A Division 2 state championship for William Monroe was extra special for the eight seniors on the team.
After the Greene Dragons beat Chilhowie, 5-4, in eight innings to win the title, the senior group was awarded diplomas on Ruritan Field in Salem, over a hundred miles away from the rest of the Monroe senior class, who had already graduated that morning.
"It's huge. I've never heard of anybody doing it. But they kept telling us during the season, if we keep winning we'll have to graduate on the field. And we were up for it. It feels amazing," Logan Forloines exclaimed.
Forloines, Spencer Breeden, Ryan Morris, Jacob Hirtz, Jordan Gentry, Lamar Nelson, Trey Kirby and Michael Thompson were all smiles as they hoisted the championship trophy in the air and then minutes later, tossed their graduation caps in the air as well.
"I love those guys. They're like my family, they've been with me for so long. I can't say enough about them. They're great kids; love to play baseball. And I'm gonna miss them," Monroe coach Mike Maynard said.
