Monticello Hands Fluvanna First Loss of Season

The Fluvanna boys basketball team entered Tuesday night as the only unbeaten team in the Jefferson District in terms of overall record, but Monticello had its eye on becoming that first blemish in the Flucos' loss column. It took more than four quarters, but the Mustangs accomplished their goal.

Monticello topped Fluvanna, 71-67, in overtime to drop Fluvanna to 9-1 on the season, 3-1 in Jefferson District play. The scored was tied at 56 after regulation and the teams battled back and forth in the extra period, but after Monticello took a 64-63 lead, the Mustangs did not relinquish that advantage, hitting some key free throws down the stretch. Monticello improves to 4-3, 3-2 in district play.

Elsewhere in the district, Charlottesville kept Goochland from grabbing its first Jefferson District win, as the Knights topped the Bulldogs, 55-34. Deshaun Blakey paced Charlottesville with 18 points as the Knights used a big second half to pull away.

Orange improved to 3-0 in district play with a 64-54 win at Western Albemarle. The Warriors fell to 1-4 in the district on the year.

Albemarle used a strong second half to top Stafford, 73-59, in Commonwealth District action on Tuesday night. The Patriots held a 28-24 lead at halftime and the two teams found themselves tied at 30 in the third quarter, but the Pats took control to seize the victory. Kendall Hawkins led the way with 24 points, while Jeremiah Morris chipped in 15 and Jake Hendrix scored 14 points.

Girls action saw Western Albemarle put together a solid all-around showing, as the Warriors topped Orange, 62-23. Ellen Shaffrey led the way with 22 points. The Warriors are now 9-3 overall on the season.

William Monroe remained a game behind Western with a 57-40 win over Louisa. The Dragons are 12-1 on the year, with their only loss coming to the Warriors.

Charlottesville dominated a district match up with Goochland on Tuesday night, topping the Bulldogs, 69-19.
