Brian Hurlocker played at Fork Union and was an assistant for nearly a decade. Now Hurlocker is the head man for Blue Devils prep team.
Fork Union announced Hurlocker's promotion from offensive coordinator/running backs coach Thursday after longtime head coach Micky Sullivan retired. The Blue Devils won eight VIS state titles and almost 200 games under Sullivan.
Hurlocker said he will draw from the experience he gained under Sullivan and Fork Union post-grad coach John Shuman in his first head coaching opportunity.
"That's the great thing about being here for nine years. I've got to learn. I got to ask a lot of questions. I couldn't do any of the things I've done thus far without Coach Sullivan, Coach Shuman and the rest of the coaching staff," Hurlocker said.
The bar is annually set high at Fork Union, where competing for state championships is the norm. Even with Sullivan away from the program, the focus on state titles won't change, according to Hurlocker.
"We're just going to prepare like we always have. Our goal is to get in the state championship. First we have to do is go out and compete and win our league. And then we have to get to the playoffs, win our playoff game and get to that last game and fight our tail off."
