One area team celebrated a state championship on Friday night, one will play for a regional title next weekend, while two other teams saw their 2010 campaigns come to an end.
Saint Anne's Belfield battled hard in a defense struggle and topped Potomac, 14-7, to take home the VISAA Division II state championship. The Panthers struck first, as an interception returned to the STAB seven yard line led to a Potomac touchdown to open things up in the first quarter. The Saints evened the score in the second quarter, as Branford Rogers found the endzone via the rush and the game was knotted at seven at halftime. It would remain that way until the fourth quarter. After a STAB drive, Charlie Murray found paydirt on the quarterback sneak to give the Saints a 14-7 lead. The Panthers put together one final drive and had a fourth and two situation with 20 seconds to play, but the Saints defense put together one final stand, stopping Potomac and icing the victory. It marks John Blake's sixth title as STAB's head coach.
Louisa seeing its 2010 campaign come to an end with a 39-21 loss to Broad Run in the Region II Division 4 semifinals. It marks the Lions' only loss of the 2010 campaign as they finish 11-1. The two teams fought to a 7-7 first quarter, but Broad Run took control in the second by scoring 24 unanswered points and taking a 32-7 lead into halftime. That second quarter proved to be the difference in the game, as Broad Run moves onto the Region II championship game.
Madison and Altavista met in the Region B Division 1 semifinals, and for the second straight year, the Mountaineers fell in their first playoff game. Altavista earned the 30-22 victory on a touchdown and two point conversion with 20 seconds to play. Madison tied the game at 22 with two minutes remaining in regulation, but Altavista putting together the final pieces for the score. Madison's season ends at 8-3.
Buckingham moved onto the Region B Division 2 championship game with a 7-0 victory over Clarke County. The Knights' put up numerous defensive stands and got several stops on fourth down. Buckingham improved to 10-1 on the year. Buckingham will travel to Gretna for the Region B Division 2 championship game next weekend.
Monticello and Fork Union will both take the field on Saturday. The Mustangs will travel to John Handley for the Region II Division 3 semifinals. Both teams enter at 7-4 and Monticello is coming off a 20-17 come-from-behind win over Goochland in last week's quarterfinals. Fork Union will battle Collegiate for the VISAA Division I state championship. FUMA defeated the Cougars, 46-21, during the regular season. Both area teams kick off their respective contests at 1:00 pm.
