Tuesday night marked a big night in high school sports across the area, as district and regional playoffs continued in several fall sports.
The Jefferson District volleyball field has been trimmed from four teams to two. Western Albemarle topped Louisa, 3-0, in the first semifinal of the evening. The Warriors are in search of their ninth straight district tournament championship, after winning their ninth consecutive regular season title this season.
Monticello punched its ticket to the district title with a 3-0 victory over Fluvanna. Kate Geldmacher led the way with 20 kills and three aces for the Mustangs. Monticello will get its third crack at Western on Thursday in the championship match.
STAB and Covenant advancing in the LIS tournament with convincing wins. The Saints topped Trinity, 3-0, while the Eagles shut out St. Gertrude's, 3-0 as well. The two advance to the LIS semifinals.
Several teams were victorious Tuesday night in Region II quarterfinal action on the hockey field. Western Albemarle put up a strong showing in a 6-0 shutout of Louisa. The Warriors bounced back from a loss to Orange in the Jefferson District championship game. They'll face Monticello on Thursday night, which topped Kettle Run in its quarterfinal match up. Orange also got a win against Liberty-Bealton as the Hornets move on.
