October 15th Friday Night EndZone

October 15, 2010

Many teams hit the gridiron in our area Friday with four games remaining on their regular season schedules and looking for key district victories.

Orange and William Monroe tangled in our Game of the Week, with the Hornets earning the big 56-21 victory. The Hornets held a 35-7 lead at the break and never looked back as they improved to 3-1 in the Jefferson District. The Dragons, meanwhile, fall to 1-3 in district play, 3-4 overall.

Western Albemarle pulled off the upset of the night, topping Monticello, 38-12. Abbott Wallenborn posted 310 total yards and four total touchdowns to fuel the Warriors to the victory. Jesse Ayres had 157 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the loss. Western improves to 2-2 in district play, while the Mustangs fall to 2-2.

Louisa remained perfect on the season with a 37-7 victory at Charlottesville on Friday. The Lions led 22-7 after the first quarter and 29-7 at the break. The Lions are now 7-0 and control their own destiny as far as a district title goes. Charlottesville falls to 0-7 and is still in search of their first win.

After giving up big halftime leads the last two weeks, Goochland was able to put a full 48 minutes together in a 54-14 rout of Fluvanna. The Bulldogs controlled the contest from start to finish as they improve to 2-2 in district play. Fluvanna falls to 2-2 in the district as well.

Albemarle traveled to Massaponax on Friday in hopes of evening its Commonwealth District record, but was unable to top the Panthers, falling 33-14. The Patriots competed well in the early going, holding a 14-13 lead at one point, but Massaponax was able to take control and pull away.

Buckingham improved to 7-0 on the season with a 35-0 trouncing of Cumberland. Knights running back Maurice Taylor put up some huge numbers, gaining 302 rushing yards on 26 carries and scoring four touchdowns. Buckingham is now just three wins away from its second straight perfect regular season.

Nelson saw its first win elude it once again on Friday, falling to Dan River, 41-20. The Governors now 0-7 on the season and will look for win number one next Friday at Appomattox.

STAB unable to stady perfect with a 41-34 shootout loss at Collegiate on Friday afternoon. This see-saw battle saw the Saints offense have one of its best performances of the season. They'll face Covenant next Friday.

Fork Union hosted Liberty Christian this afternoon, but fell, 35-20, despite a hard second half fight. Blue Devils head coach Mickey Sullivan joined us in studio to talk about the loss and the 2010 season.
