The Albemarle boys soccer team already has a trophy that says they're the Group AAA state champion this season. Now a national website is putting the Patriots among the best teams in the country.
ESPNHS.com released its latest FAB 50 rankings for spring soccer on Tuesday. It included Albemarle, who beat Colonial Forge 3-0 in Saturday's AAA state championship, at No. 9 in the country.
The poll includes teams from the 13 states across the country where boys soccer is played in the spring.
Albemarle finished the season on a seven-game winning streak, going unbeaten en route to Northwest Region and Group AAA championships. The Patriots cracked the ESPNHS rankings a week ago at No. 40. On Tuesday they were listed as the "Big Mover" in this week's rankings, based on the strength of Albemarle's postseason run.
Albemarle High School also announced plans on Tuesday for a celebration for the boys soccer team. The event is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday on the Patriots' turf field.
