Monticello High School Athletic Director Fitzgerald Barnes announced Friday that Rodney Redd will be the new head football coach for the Monticello Mustangs. He replaces Brud Bicknell, who has been the head coach at Monticello High since it opened in 1998.
Bicknell announced in February that he had accepted the head coach position at the new Patriot High School in Prince William County.
Monticello High School Athletic Director Fitzgerald Barnes said, “We welcome him as our second head football coach and know he will continue to be a valuable part of the Monticello community as he exercises more leadership in his new role.”
Redd has worked with students at Monticello High School since 2006. He has been a special education teacher and weightlifting instructor from 2006-2010 and has most recently served as an assistant football coach and assistant athletic director since August 2010.
He was the head football coach for Fluvanna County High School for the 2009-10 school year, and served as the assistant coach for defense under Brud Bicknell for several years. Redd also served as the Athletics Director for Magna Vista High School in Henry County from 2004 to 2006 and was an assistant coach for Western Carolina University for the 2003 season. Redd was co-captain of the North Carolina State University team in 1998.
Monticello High School’s football team has been to the Group AA Division 3 semifinals three times in the last 13 years and won the state championship in 2007. The Mustangs had a 7-5 record this year.
Redd holds a Bachelor’s Degree from North Carolina State University and is currently pursuing a master’s of special education from Virginia State University.
