St. Anne's-Belfield Searching for First Win

At this point of the season, the St.-Anne's Belfield football team is used to having a "0" in its record. Only that zero is usually the second digit, not the first.

The private-school powerhouse has fallen on hard times in 2012, with the Saints still in search of their first victory.

But STAB coach John Blake is using this season's disappointment as a learning tool.

"I mean we've had our difficulties with the wins and losses but we're still learning a lot of football and the kids are working hard everyday."

"We have a really young team," senior lineman Arron Stinnie added. "We have to get used to that and everyone has to gel together and figure out what works for us."

The Saints started the 2012 season in heartbreaking fashion, dropping a double-overtime contest on the road to Bishop Sullivan Catholic and Blake believes that game has put his team in a funk they have yet to come out of.

"We can all say 'what if' but that first game took its toll on us," Blake explained. "We go down and lose a double-overtime game early on in a game we probably should have won and I think that affected us too much."

Blake has tried pressing different buttons, including moving starting quarterback Jake Allen to tailback, all in an effort to jumpstart his team.

"We're doing anything we can. To be honest, we've had lots of conversations with all the kids just to make sure they understand what we're trying to do and we're just trying to find the right fits and see if we can't make something happen."

The Saints are hoping to make something happen Friday against their cross-town rival Covenant.

"Well it's the in-town kids and everyone sort of knows each other so yeah it's a fun one," Blake said. "A lot of our games are out of town against boarding schools and things like that so this is the true in-town game so I think all of our kids will be excited about it."

"I mean it's always been a big rivalry between the two teams but we're just looking to come out and play hard and get a good win this week if we can," Stinnie added.
