You won't find Alec Shifflett listed at just one position on the Nelson County football roster -- because he's pretty much played them all.

"I've played quarterback, offensive line, running back, fullback, linebacker, defensive end, receiver," Shifflett said with a smile.

"He's been a real leader since day one. And he's willing to do whatever it takes to win," Nelson head coach Mark Poston added.

Shifflett has used his role as senior co-captain to keep a winless Governors team focused on finishing the season.

"It's meant a lot to keep this team together because people are going to be getting down and quitting but we haven't really had anyone quit because of losing so it's really important to keep this team together."

"In tough times seniors either lead or they've got to get out of the way and he's led really, really well," Poston said.

A multi-position player on the field, Shifflett is equally versatile off it. He carries a 4.2 GPA, volunteers at a local food shelter and is a member of the Boy Scouts.

"Yeah it helps me being able to work with people. Actually, it's a really big help, because there's a lot of different groups and activies you have to do."

Shifflett plans on attending one of the service academies after graduation. For now, he's comfortable setting an example for his younger teammates.

"What we've taken pride in is making sure they stay on track and keep the pride and whatnot so we're not getting down."

"His better days are ahead," Poston said. "He's smart, he's strong and he's such a good kid. I wish we had him for three or four more years around here."
