Charlotte Devine is a UVa student by morning, a Monticello senior by day, and a volleyball star by night. This semester, Devine is taking the equivalent of Spanish 6 two days a week at Virginia, in addition to her normal classes and volleyball commitments.
"Seeing the colleges she's applying to, and the hard work she's putting in in the classroom, and her GPA and test scores go to show she's a rare breed," said Monticello volleyball coach John Mitchem.
On the court, Devine is a four year starter for the Mustangs. At the end of the year, she will leave the program as one of the career leaders in both kills and aces.
"I love volleyball because it's such a strategy game. I think having that side of the sport really makes it a lot more interesting," she says.
While her interest in the sport and her talent were always there, Devine and her coach agree that she has changed a lot in her time as a Mustang. Mitchem says, "she started as a quiet freshman. She's now a very boisterous, vocal leader."
"My mindset has really changed since then," adds Devine. "I've gotten a lot more outwardly competitive, and I think I want to boost up the rest of my team as much as I can."
Devine is not just a leader on the court. She is president of both the art and spanish honors societies and a member of the Model United Nations club. She maintains a 4.4 GPA, and hopes to major in international relations in college.
"I just really like being able to apply everything I've learned about different cultures and everything, and being able to figure out how the world works together and interacts with each other."
