Thursday night saw high school playoff action continue in both the public and private school ranks. Several area teams will get the chance to play for region and conference championships this weekend, and earned trips to next week's state tournament as well.
The Fluvanna boys earned a 67-64 victory over Woodgrove in the Region II semifinals. The Flucos led by five at the break, but trailed by one entering the final quarter. Munro Rateau's team got the job done down the stretch and advanced to Saturday's Region II championship game, while also earning a berth in the state tournament.
Fluvanna will face Charlottesville, which needed two overtimes to down Millbrook in the other semifinal. Deshaun Blakey led the Black Knights with 25 points, while Daquan Jones chipped in 21. Fluvanna and Charlottesville will tip off at noon on Saturday in the Region II title game, which will take place at Fluvanna.
Miller never trailed in its VIC semifinal match up with Roanoke Catholic, cruising to a 65-41 win. Andrew White led the Mavericks with a game high 28 points. Miller will face Hargrave on Saturday in the VIC championship game at Virginia Episcopal.
On the girls' side, Western Albemarle had no trouble with Charlottesville, downing the Knights for the third time this season, 53-23. Ellen Shaffrey scored 17 points to lead the Warriors, while Carolyn Schneller chipped in nine. Western Albemarle will travel to Millbrook on Saturday evening for the Region II championship game.
Elsewhere, Miller topped Eastern Mennonite, 64-33, to advance to the Blue Ridge Conference title game.
