The start of the high school football season is still a month and some change away but with today's release of the fall schedule, it feels a whole lot closer.

Teams will hit the field to begin play on August 30th, with a few area teams beginning their quest for a state title that night.

Reigning Jefferson District champ Western Albemarle travels across the mountain to Spotswood, Charlottesville visits Eastern View and Fluvanna County opens at home with William Fleming.

The rest of the teams pick up the following week, including Monticello (vs. George Wythe) and Nelson County (vs. Page County) at home.

September 13th sees the Mustangs host Fork Union in an interesting public-private battle. Louisa County (vs. Courtland) and Buckingham County (vs. Amelia) are home as well.

September 20th features Charlottesville and William Monroe stepping out of district to tangle at Monroe.

The following week is a huge night in central Virginia.

Both Albemarle and Orange County make their Jefferson District debuts Sept. 27. Albemarle travels to Fluvanna County while Orange makes its J-D return at Western Albemarle.

Buckingham and Goochland also renew their rivalry that night. The Bulldogs beat the Knights twice last season, including ending Buckingham's season in the Group A, Division II quarterfinals.

District play kicks into full gear October 4th with the annual Albemarle-Western Albemarle cross-county showdown taking place at AHS.

Two of the biggest games in the JD come back-to-back for Western.

The Warriors travel to Monticello October 18th in a rematch of a Region II quarterfinal that saw the Mustangs end Western's season.

The following week, Western travels to Charlottesville for another Region II rematch. The Warriors beat CHS in the first round last season.
