The start of the 2014 high school football season is still over a month away but it feels closer with the release of this year's schedule by the VHSL Friday.
Six area teams will begin their season August 29th, including Louisa County. The Lions host Spotsylvania in Mark Fischer's return to the Lions' sideline. Fischer had spent seven season as Louisa's head coach before taking a job in South Carolina in 2010.
Two new coaches will make their debuts the following week when Brandon Isaiah leads Albemarle into Massponax and John Rocha and the William Monroe Green Dragons host Spotswood on September 5th.
September 12th will see an interesting private-public matchup when Fork Union visits Monticello. The Mustangs beat up on the Blue Devils last season, 58-38.
Region 2A foes Buckingham County and Goochland will tangle September 26th at Goochland. The Knights were a state semifinalist last season and the Bulldogs made it to the state quarterfinals.
Western Albemarle will host county rival Albemarle on October 3rd in a rematch of a 41-39 Western Albemarle win last season. Steven Hearn caught the game-winner in the back of the endzone on the final play of the game.
The Monticello-Western Albemarle rivalry will begin anew October 17th in Crozet. The Mustangs beat Western by 10 last season.
William Monroe and Madison County will also renew their border war that same night.
The "Battle of the Gordonsville Tastee Freeze" will take place October 24th when Orange County hosts Louisa County.
