The William Monroe boys basketball team will head into the the Bull Run tournament on an eleven-game winning streak, with a perfect 14-0 record in district play.
The Green Dragons finished up their unbeaten district season Monday night, beating Rappahannock at home, 85-31.
Tuesday afternoon, they were getting ready for round one of the district tournament, where the Greene Dragons will be trying to extend their winning streak.
"The run started with playing defense, we got outscored in some games early in the year," says head coach Mike Maynard. "We're pretty good offensively, but we made a commitment about the seventh game in the season to really make a commitment on the defensive end, and that's really helped us and that's given us a lot of confidence."
Maynard says his seniors have been instrumental in the recent success, and the Green Dragon seniors credit the coaching staff with keeping them on track.
"Everybody's been fighting hard," says senior guard Gary Morris. "We lost the first game of our season and it was a pretty bad loss. We all just pretty much bounced back from there and kept fighting hard. Coach Maynard tells us to keep working hard, I mean everybody just listens to him and everything goes right."
"Coach kept us level-headed," says senior forward Markel Williams. "Sometimes we want to go out there and celebrate and just be with our family a lot, but you know, we've got to get in the gym. Sundays sometimes, we'll just open up the gym and even work harder."
