Western Wins First Girls Tennis State Championship

After falling just short of winning a state title in 2013, the Western Albemarle girls tennis team brought home the first-ever title in program history on Saturday at Liberty University.

The Warriors topped York 5-1 in the 3A title match. Western got its first win of the day from Emily Kochard, who won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Maddy Ix followed at No. 2 singles, finishing off her opponent with a 6-3, 6-1 win.

Savannah Diamond made the overall score 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles. Western got another win at No. 5 singles from Maggie Roesch, who rallied after losing the first set to take the final two. Stephanie Barton sealed the championship for the Warriors at No. 4 singles, coming away with a 7-6 (4), 7-5 victory.
