The Western Albemarle girls' high school basketball team has forfeited its Jefferson District tournament quarterfinal win over Goochland after unknowingly violating a VHSL rule. In that game, the Warriors played a JV player who had already played in the Jefferson District JV championship game.
Western Albemarle was the #1 seed in the Jefferson District tournament. Goochland will now face Monticello in the Jefferson District tournament semifinals.

Statement from Western Albemarle High School
February 12, 2011
Due to self-reporting an administrative error to the Virginia High School League the Western Albemarle Varsity Girls' basketball team will forfeit their Jefferson District Quarterfinal game to Goochland. The Warriors remain Jefferson District regular season champions and will host a Region II Quarterfinal game on February 22.
Virginia High School League rule 58-2-2 Varsity/Junior Varsity Tournament Participation Limitation states "When a district sponsors both a postseason junior varsity and a postseason varsity tournament, a player shall be limited to participating in only one of these tournaments." A Western Albemarle Junior Varsity player played in both this past Thursday's Jefferson District Junior Varsity Championship game as well as the last minute of the Western Albemarle Varsity team's 65-25 win versus Goochland in the Jefferson District tournament.
Western Albemarle Athletic Director Steve Heon quote:
"I want to credit Head Coach Kris Wright for recognizing this violation and doing the right thing of bringing this to the administration's attention. The violation involved is a basketball specific rule of which we were unaware. The team is understandably disappointed they will not be able to compete in the remainder of the Jefferson District Tournament. They will now turn their attention to preparing for the Region II tournament."
