The 2011 Virginia Group AA boys' golf tournament opened at the Shenandoah Valley Golf Club in Front Royal Monday morning. Western Albemarle finished the opening round tied with Cave Spring for first place.
Western's Landon Weis had the low score for the Warriors, shooting a 74. Kyle Landis finished with a 76, followed by teammates Brett Engle, Alex O'Dell, Brett Warnick, and Hunter Weis.
The Warriors 21-match winning streak came to an end last week when they finished as Region II runners up to Monticello. The Mustangs are in sixth place after Round 1 and were led by Evan Childress, who shot a 78.
In Group A competition at Heritage Oaks, Madison County's Austin Kelliher shot a 79 to open individual play Monday. He's in 12th place entering day two. In the team tournament, William Monroe shot a 310 and is currently in fourth place.
