William Monroe baseball coach Mike Maynard told his team back in February that the goal was to make it to the state tournament and see what happens from there.
What happened is William Monroe is the 2012 Group A Division 2 state champions.
The Greene Dragons got timely hitting early and rallied late for a thrilling 5-4 win in extra innings over Chilhowie in the state final Saturday at Kiwanis Field in Salem.
Freshman Keegan Woolford delivered the game-winning hit in the eighth winning and Austin Batten scored the championship run.
The game was scoreless in the second until a Chilhowie error plated Monroe's first run, followed by a three-run home run off the scoreboard in left from Ryan Leake. The Greene Dragons led 4-0 after two.
A solo home run by Chilhowie in the fifth cut the lead to 4-1 and the Warriors tied the game on a three-run double after Monroe starter Jordan Gentry loaded the bases on walks.
The Dragons had two on in their half of the sixth but couldn't push the go-ahead run across, with the Warriors suffering the same fate in the top-half of the seventh.
Lamar Nelson relieved Gentry in the top of the eighth with a runner on and immediately gave up a single. The next batter went up the middle but Batten was able to knock it down and throw home for the out, leading to Woolford's heroics in the eighth.
