Monticello senior Daniel Poehailos runs cross country and track, and is a 4-year member of the Mustang Marching Band. In the past few years, Poehailos has perfected his balancing act.
"Every year, he's communicating with me and his band director, and figuring it out,' says Monticello cross country coach Doug Bloor. "That maturity level impresses me, that he really has been able to do both of those, and do them well."
Poehailos has earned county honors and all-district honors for band. In outdoor track, he anchored the 2011 Monticello 4 x 800 relay team that was runner up in district. He is a captain of the cross country team, and has quickly become one of the Mustangs' top distance runners.
"It's really one of those sports where you rely on yourself, and you can see the progress you make," Poehailos says of cross country running. "The effort you put in is rewarded with faster times."
Bloor says Poehailos has excelled as a leader for the Mustangs. "He's the first guy out doing (plyometrics), he's the first guy to get the distance run going. I think that leading by example is an incredible part of strong leadership, and he exemplifies that."
Another place he has seen his work pay off is in the classroom. The senior has a 4.5 grade point average and is in the top 10 percent of his class.
When the challenge of balancing school, band and running has become overwhelming, Poehailos says the promise of seeing his hard work pay off has kept him going.
"There's a lot of weeks where I'm really stressed out between juggling it all," he says. "A couple of times, I've come close to quitting maybe one or the other. But in the end, when you're done with a race at the end of racing season and you see awesome times, or at the end of marching season and you see your finished field show, that's the reward from it, and I like it."
