Acker, Mealy Named Student-Athlete of the Year

Western Albemarle swimmer Seana Acker and Louisa County football player Andre Mealy have been named the 2011-12 Charlottesville Newsplex Student-Athletes of the Year.

Acker and Mealy were chosen from a pool of 30 seniors from area high schools who had been honored throughout the school year.

"It's a great award to win, considering everybody else that was in the running for it," said Mealy. "I know there were a lot of great athletes in the area that won athlete of the week. And it's just humbling to be picked as the best."

Mealy bounced back from an injury his junior year to run for 1,713 yards and score 24 touchdowns as a senior. The all-district selection will play football at James Madison in college.

Mealy was honored as Student Athlete of the Week on October 6, 2011.

"Everything he does, he strives to be the best at it. He doesn't do anything halfway," said his football coach, Jon Meeks. "School, he wants to be the best at it, and his GPA, a 4.7, shows that. Football, the same thing."

After being part of back-to-back state titles with the Warriors, Acker plans to swim at Towson next year. She admits that those two state championships are the high school accomplishments she's most proud of.

"Being part of the Western swim team is just one of the best things in my life," Acker said. "We're such a great team, and it's definitely a lot of fun."

"Seana is someone who, in everything she does - whether it's sports, academics, anything - she gives 100 percent, and goes over-the-top to make sure that she's satisfied with her efforts and it's the best of her ability," said her swimming coach, Diana Bowen.

Acker was Student Athlete of the Week on February 23.

William Monroe's Alex Cave and Tiffany Spencer of Buckingham were the other finalists for the female award. The other male finalists were Albemarle's Adam Visokay and Madison County's Travis Warren.
