Student Athlete of the Week -- David Taylor, Western Albemarle

David Taylor is good at a lot of things, but one thing he's not good at is slowing down.

"Whenever coach makes me take a week off, it's usually the worst week of the year."

Between cross-country, indoor, and outdoor track, Taylor has collected district, region, and state honors, including three state championships and five region titles. He also has a 4.48 GPA, and has played trumpet in the Western band and Jazz Ensemble throughout high school.

"I know there's a good number of hours in the day," says Taylor. "I put academics as the first priority, then track, then everything else comes after that."

In his 25 years of coaching a decorated Western Albemarle team, Warriors head coach Lindy Bain says Taylor is one of the best he's seen.

"Probably one of the top five," says Bain. "I'm sure he's sitting over there right now thinking, 'well, by the time I finish I'm going to be the top,' but we'll see."

"When Coach Bain says I'm one of the top athletes he's coached it really means a lot," said Taylor. "Especially, seeing as he's coached All-Americans in college."

In addition to being one of the best runners he's coached, Bain says Taylor is one of the most enjoyable young men he's gotten to know.

"I think anybody on the team and anybody that knows Dave would say he's just really pleasant to be around. He never brings people down, he's always bringing people up."

Next year, Taylor attend Cornell, where he'll run for the Big Red. Bain says the school is a great fit for the senior who has excelled academically and athletically.

"Number one, it's a great academic school, and number two, I think he's going to fit in well with the team. They've got a good program, a very strong program and I think he'll fit in there well."

"It's hard to beat in a lot of areas academically," Taylor says of his future at Cornell. "I like the team a lot, and having my running help me help get into a school like that, I couldn't ask for more."

He'll soon be a Division-1 collegiate runner, but for now, Taylor is hoping to finish high school strong, and to continue to improve in his final season at Western.

"You can always be faster, and I'm hoping I can really bring my times down this outdoor season, and maybe get a state title or two more."
