Student Athlete of the Week -- Hannah Lascano, Fluvanna

Fluvanna senior Hannah Lascano is very determined, in both athletics and academics. That determination played a key role in the Flucos getting a girl's lacrosse team started at the school last year, and it's also helped her overcome a number of injury issues in her career.

"I've had hip fractures from playing soccer back when I was 12, and I still have complications from that," she says.

Fluvanna cross country coach Rose Brogan says Lascano was determined to not let her injuries keep her off the course.

"Even when she's in pain, like the first year or so it was her hip, but it never seemed to slow her down," said Brogan. "She would just run her race then come and go, 'oh it hurts,' but she was always there."

Lascano wants to take those issues and make them into a career. The senior, who plans to attend the University of Mary Washington, wants to
study physical therapy.

"I've had to go to physical therapy all the time. You're just kind of around that environment a lot, and it's very interesting."

Despite her injury issues, Lascano has become one of Fluvanna's strongest cross country runners.

"This year when she came out, she was like, I'm going to do it, so she made it into the top 7 and was on the regional team that took us to states," said Brogan. "Her times have dropped drastically, like she got down to the low 22s, which is a good time for a 5K."

Brogan, who is also Lascano's Physics teacher, says she sees that determination at school as well.

"She's a good hard worker. She does the same thing in the classroom that she does out on the course."

Lascano maintains a 3.7 GPA, and has earned academic excellence awards in Honors World History, Biology, Earth Science, and English.

"I don't like to fail, so just trying to get the best grades, do the best that you can in every aspect of your life," she says of her commitment to academics.

Last year, when she and her teammates set out to start a school affiliated lacrosse program at Fluvanna, she wasn't going to settle for failure there, either.

"There was a lot of fundraising that you had to do and it was a lot of hard work, and you had to convince a lot of people to let it happen, but yeah we did it."

In their first season, the Flucos girl's lacrosse team didn't score any wins, but Lascano feels their greatest accomplishment was just getting the chance to play.

"We were definitely the underdogs, and even though we weren't the best, we kind of felt like it because we really worked hard. All those other teams we were playing, they were so great and so established, and we just want to get there."
