Student Athlete of the Week -- Hannah Miller

Fluvanna senior volleyball player Hannah Miller was just named to the All-Jefferson District first team for the third straight year. Miller will leave the program as one of the most decorated players in Fluco history, but her legacy at Fluvanna will be more about her leadership and work ethic than her numerous records and honors.

"She is by far one of the best leaders we've ever had come through," says Fluvanna volleyball coach Christi Harlowe. "She leads on the court by example, and not just by talking about leading. And the kids follow her."

Miller, a three year captain for the Flucos, credits leadership programs she has taken part in with helping her become a strong captain.

"It's just really, I think, helped me to grow as a person, and I think it shows in everything I do from here on out," Miller says.

Harlowe saw that leadership in action this season, when Miller helped lead an inexperienced Fluco team to the Jefferson District finals.

"We had the youngest team I've ever coached this year, and a brand new setter, and she worked with that setter with patience and kindness, and made that setter second team All-District. That's a huge accomplishment, and it's for Kate [Stutz's] work as a setter, but that also is from Hannah's leadership and Hannah's ability to work with her as a teammate."

In her four years as a starter, Miller has set a number of school records, including for most kills in a season and career kills. Once her application is approved, Miller will rank fifth in the VHSL record books in career kills and second in career blocks.

"It hasn't really sank in yet, but it definitely is pretty awesome and I'm really excited about it," Miller says of her numerous records.

"She's an all-around player," says Harlowe. "Where some, you've got great hitters or you've got great defenders, but she's got the whole package which makes her incredibly special."

Next year, Miller will play college volleyball at Christopher Newport University, but Harlowe says a part of her will stay with the Flucos.

"She's been Fluvanna volleyball for a long time, and she's going to leave her legacy with the kids coming back that got to play with her this year, because they've learned their drive, and they've learned their work ethic through her."
