On the day before her high school graduation, Covenant swimmer Jane Schmidt found out she'd earned one more honor from her high school career. The Eagles' four-year captain was named the female Student Athlete of the Year for the 2013-14 school year.
"I was just really surprised, I was kind of like why did they pick me?" she recalls. "There's so many awesome people they could have picked. I was really surprised and really honored to be picked."
The Covenant graduate was an honor roll student throughout her high school career. In the pool, she peaked in her final season, making states for the first time.
"It's really cool because being a student and an athlete, I guess student athletes, we have to make sacrifices with our time to do both, like focus really hard on both things," she said. "It's a lot of work, so it's great to be recognized for that."
Schmidt was a leader throughout her time at Covenant and hopes to study education when she heads to the University of Richmond in the fall. She is also preparing for her final summer with the Jefferson Swim League, and plans to take on some coaching responsibilities as well.
"I just love working with young kids. It's a lot of fun, so I'm hoping to be able to do that."
