Mariah Dermody is captain of the Orange County competition cheer squad, and the lone four-year varsity starter.

"Mariah is a very easy going person," said 25-year coach Laurie Jamerson. "She gets along well with everybody, is non-judgmental and always willing to help out with new girls on the squad."

The Hornets senior has helped guide the team to place in the Jefferson District competition each of the last three seasons. This year, the team will make their debut in the Triple-A competition at Brooke Point High School on October 26.

"The hardest part is definitely getting the team to work together and agree on things," said the 2011 captain. "But I really love when the routine comes together and just looks really good."

Mariah is also involved in student government, National Honor Society, and was selected to attend Leadership on the Lawn at UVa. In addition to her willingness to support her teammates, Mariah developed the BUDDY Club at Orange County High School which helps middle school students prepare for the graduation to senior high.

"It definitely helps them with the transition, said Mariah, who currently mentors a seventh grade girl. "I remember going from middle school to high school, it was a pretty drastic change. It's kind of nice to already have someone already there for you that knows the ropes, just to give you some advice."

Mariah is also a regular volunteer at St. Thomas Episcopal Church.

Some people focus on what's important for them and Mariah doesn't do that, she looks at others around her."
