  David Taylor will soon be running for the Cornell Big Red, but for now, he is hoping to finish high school strong, and to continue to improve in his final season at Western.

  Last May, the Monticello girl's lacrosse goalie suffered a concussion, and the Mustangs were left without a keeper. That's when Jessica Worsham stepped in.

  Fluvanna County senior and Student Athlete of the Week Chris Markham says he got into distance running by accident.

  Student Athlete of the Week -- Drew Kelliher, Madison Co.

  Madison County senior Drew Kelliher runs cross-country for the Mountaineers, is an all-region swimmer, and is the drum major in the school’s band. On top of all that, this week’s Student Athlete of the Week is also at the top of his class.

  Student Athlete of the Week -- Zach Switzer, Woodberry Forest

  Woodberry Forest swimmer Zach Switzer just wrapped up a decorated and record breaking high school career. Now that he's conquered the VISAA, he'll be trying to do the same to the ACC, while swimming for Virginia Tech.

  Student Athlete of the Week -- Timberly Deane, Madison Co.

  Madison County senior Timberly Deane is a rare type of player on the basketball court. She prefers working on defense over offense, takes more pride n her assists than points, and her coach says she's about as unselfish as they get.

  Student Athlete of the Week -- Elsa Strickland, Western Albemarle

  The Western Albemarle girls swim team just wrapped up their third state title in a row. One Warrior who has been there for all three is senior captain Elsa Strickland, who has become one of Western's most dependable student athletes.

  Student Athlete of the Week -- Matt Lockman, Albemarle

  Albemarle swimmer Matt Lockman has won four district and four regional titles, and will swim for an elusive state title in the coming weeks. Lockman is two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American, an honor given to swimmers who excel in the pool and the classroom.

  Student Athlete of the Week -- Lauren Field, William Monroe

  William Monroe senior Lauren Field will swim in the Bull Run District meet this weekend, hoping to eventually return to states for a second time. Field isn’t just one of Monroe’s fastest female swimmers, she is also one of the school’s top students.

  Student Athlete of the Week -- Tommy Mullin, Western

  When Ed Redmond started his job as the Western Albemarle head football coach, he says he quickly figured out that linebacker Tommy Mullin would be one of his team's leaders.

  Student Athlete of the Week -- Jessica Schmitt, Madison

  As a sophomore at Madison County High School, Jessica Schmitt began working as the varsity volleyball team manager, but her time as the team's manager didn't last long.

  Student Athlete of the Week -- Elias Hubbard, Miller School

  Miller School senior Elias Hubbard is a VIC champion cross-country runner and is one of the hardest working student athletes at his school. But Hubbard hasn't always been the exceptonally determined student and athlete that he is today.

  Student Athlete of the Week -- Hannah Lascano, Fluvanna

  Fluvanna senior Hannah Lascano is very determined, in both athletics and academics. That determination played a key role in the Flucos getting a girl's lacrosse team started at the school last year, and it's also helped her overcome a number of injury issues in her career.

  Student Athlete of the Week -- J.P. Utz, Madison

  Like most AP Calculus students, J.P. Utz gets frustrated from time to time. But the Madison County senior says he gets to work out those frustrations on the wrestling mat or the football field. "It's just a way to kind of vent, you know, you go to Calculus class and it kind of frustrates you, and I just like hitting people," he says.

  Student Athlete of the Week -- Zack Jackson, Louisa

  Louisa quarterback Zack Jackson accounted for 28 total touchdowns and more than 2,400 yards of offense in his senior season, but Jackson has given the Louisa community much more than just his effort on the football field.

  Student Athlete of the Week -- Caroline Porco, Albemarle

  Albemarle senior libero Caroline Porco was just named to the all-region second team. She's also a two time Commonwealth District first team honoree, but Porco's individual accomplishments have not meant as much to her as the success she and her team enjoyed this year.

  Student Athlete of the Week -- Rachel Meek, Buckingham

  Buckingham County High School doesn't have a girl's soccer team, but that hasn't kept Rachel Meek off the field. Meek has played on the boy's soccer team all four years of high school.

• 

  Student Athlete of the Week -- Lauren Reifsteck, Western

  Lauren Reifsteck has been on the varsity volleyball team at Western Albemarle for three years, but this season, she stepped into a bigger role as the warriors setter and a team leader.

• 

  Student Athlete of the Week -- Hannah Miller

  Fluvanna senior volleyball player Hannah Miller was just named to the All-Jefferson District first team for the third straight year. Miller will leave the program as one of the most decorated players in Fluco history, but her legacy at Fluvanna will be more about her leadership and work ethic than her numerous records and honors.

  Student Athlete of the Week -- Allison Huschke, Albemarle

  Albemarle cross country runner Allison Huschke will try to finish up a strong senior season when the Patriots compete in the state championships Saturday at Great Meadow. Huschke has returned from injury and put together an impressive season, while maintaining a 4.3 grade point average.

  Student Athlete of the Week -- Dashon Tibbs, Fluvanna

  Fluvanna senior quarterback Dashon Tibbs gained more than 1700 total yards and scored 13 touchdowns this season. But Tibbs' impact in Fluvanna reaches beyond the football field, and into the community.

  Student Athlete of the Week -- Daniel Poehailos

  Monticello senior Daniel Poehailos runs cross country and track, and is a 4-year member of the Mustang Marching Band. In the past few years, Poehailos has perfected his balancing act.
