Virginia starting tailback Mikell Simpson and cornerback Chris Cook did not travel with the team to Jacksonville. Sources tell CBS19 that the student-athletes failed to meet academic standards, and their status for the Gator Bowl is pending.
On Thursday, Head Coach Al Groh said that, in accordance with University of Virginia privacy issues, he doesn't want to release any more information, but the situation might resolve itself by Friday.
CBS19 has learned that Simpson might join the team in Jacksonville.
As reported first on CBS19, Cavaliers cornerback Chris Cook was seen talking with Groh outside the team busses prior to the team's departure from the McCue center. Cook did not board the bus.
CBS19 has learned that it is unlikely Cook will play in the Gator Bowl.
On his teleconference, Groh confirmed that Cook is not in Jacksonville, and neither is tailback Mikell Simpson. Groh added that the rest of the Cavalier team is present in Jacksoinville.
