The Virginia football team signed 18 new recruits on Wednesday. Only three of them come from the Commonwealth, plus a Fork Union postgraduate. Austin Pasztor is an offensive lineman from Tillonsburg, Ontario. He is currently playing for FUMA's postgraduate football program. UVa head coach Al Groh said he was happy with the number of recruits he signed from Maryland. The Cavaliers picked up three athletes from Maryland and another recruit from Washington D.C.
Torrey Mack is the only running back the Cavs signed this year. Coach Groh says the Connecticut high school star is an explosive back. He was ranked as the number eight running back by Rivals.com. Mack is six foot and 190 pounds. The recruiting class is split evenly down the middle. Nine players recruited on offense, nine on defense, and one punter.
The Cavaliers 2008 recruiting class is ranked 62nd in the nation and 11th in the ACC, just ahead of Duke.
The Cavaliers lost fourteen starters from this past year. Coach Groh also field questions pertaining to the future of the five athletes who left the program early due to academic reasons. Groh said all of the athletes are committed to coming back to Virginia and have no plans to transfer schools. This group of athletes includes Jameel Sewell, Jeffrey Fitzgerald, and Chris Cook. Groh's next step is to fill the defensive coordinator position.
