Virginia's Season Comes to an End in NCAA Second Round

March 25, 2008

Lyndra Littles scored 29 points and pulled down 14 rebounds, but it was not enough, as the Cavalier women's basketball team fell to Old Dominion in overtime, 88-85. The loss ends Virginia's season.

The Monarchs opened up a double digit lead in the first half, but Virginia came charging back. Sharnee Zoll's runner at the end of the half pulled the Wahoos to within three at the break.

The second half saw Old Dominion once again open up a lead of the double digit variety, but again, Virginia came back. ODU led, 78-75, in the final seconds of the second half, but the Cavaliers grabbed six offensive rebounds during one sequence, which ended with Aisha Mohammed scoring and being fouled with 1.8 seconds to play. She hit the free throw to send the game to overtime.

The extra frame was fast paced from the opening tip, as Mohammed tipped the ball right to Lyndra Littles who scored four seconds into the frame. Virginia opened up an 85-81 lead, but saw the lead evaporate, as the game was tied at 85 with 34 seconds left.

Old Dominion held the ball as the shot clock wound down, and Jazzman Walters hit a deep three with four seconds to play. Littles attempted two three pointers in the final seconds, with one being blocked, and the other falling well short, giving the Monarchs the 88-85 win.

In addition to Littles, several other Cavaliers put up impressive numbers in the losing cause. Mohammed posted 17 points and pulled down 15 boards, while Sharnee Zoll added 13 points and dished out nine assists, in what turned out to be her final college game.

The loss puts Virginia's final record at 24-10. Meanwhile, the Monarchs advance to their 12th Sweet 16 in school history, where top seeded Connecticut awaits.
