Matt Packer pitched seven solid innings for Virginia, as the Cavalier baseball team topped Georgia Tech, 4-2, in game one of a three game set on Thursday night. Virginia improves to 15-13, one game better than the Yellow Jackets in the ACC Coastal Division standings.
Georgia Tech struck first, as a Derek Dietrich single scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth. Virginia responded in the bottom half, as Tyler Cannon's sacrifice fly scored Phil Gosselin to tie things up at one. The sixth inning saw Virginia plate two runs, as David Adams reached on a throwing error with the bases loaded, allowing two runs to score. The Cavs added one in the sixth as John Barr singled on the left side to score Gosselin again, and went on for the 4-2 win.
Packer lasted seven innings, giving up just one earned run, and struck out seven. Michael Schwimmer came on for the save.
The two teams take the field for game two on Friday night at 6:00.
