Four Cavalier lacrosse players helped the under 19 Team USA to a World Championship this past weekend, and return to Charlottesville as gold medalists. Shamel Bratton, Rhamel Bratton, Adam Ghitleman, and incoming freshman Nick Elsmo each made key contributions to the squad.
The Americans cruised through the tournament undefeated, notching a 6-0 record during the event, and improving to 36-0 all time in international competition. Saturday's championship match saw USA jump out to a 7-3 lead over Canada, and down the host country, 19-12.
Elsmo scored three goals in the final, capping off a solid tournament, while Rhamel Bratton added two goals. Both players stepped up during the semifinals and finals. Elsmo posted a combined seven goals in the two key games, while Bratton added a combined five.
Ghitleman posted 19 saves in net to earn the win. His save percentage proved to be one of the best in the 12 team field throughout the event.
The four players now return to Charlottesville, and will begin preparation for the 2009 season.
