Matt Poole and Brian Ownby scored two goals each to lead the Cavalier men's soccer team past Duke, 4-2, Wednesday night in the ACC quarterfinals.
Virginia struck first in the 17th minute, as Matt Poole fired home a penalty kick to put the Cavaliers up 1-0. The Blue Devils took control after that for the rest of the first half. Darrius Barnes scored to tie things up in the 30th minute, with Mike Grella putting Duke ahead with a score in the 36th minute. Virginia went into the locker room trailing 2-1.
The Wahoos took control in the second half. Poole connected on another penalty kick in the 56th minute to tie things up, and Brian Ownby broke the tie in the 78th to put Virginia ahead for good. Ownby added an insurance goal in the 84th minute.
The 4-2 Cavalier win punches their ticket to the ACC semifinals on Friday. Virginia takes on Wake Forest, who topped the Wahoos, 2-0, in the regular season finale.
As for Wednesday's win, it snaps a three game losing streak against Duke for Virginia.
